Most criminal cases in Ontario now ending before charges are tested at trial

More than half of the criminal charges laid by police in Ontario never make it to trial, according to data from Statistics Canada. The numbers paint a troubling picture of the province’s justice system.  More judges, staff, prosecutors and courtrooms needed, says Crown attorneys’ association.

Crown attorneys in N.L. are 'crumbling' under their workload, and it's putting the public at risk

Shawn Patten, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Crown Attorneys Association, believes Happy Valley-Goose Bay report recommendations could make workload 'untenable'.... PC Justice Critic Calling for Review of Staffing Levels in Crown Attorney’s Office

The Newfoundland and Labrador Crown Attorneys Association says some prosecutors have up to 200 cases on their plate, and sometimes work until early morning preparing for a trial. PC Justice Critic Helen Conway Ottenheimer believes that Crown attorneys are too important a player in the justice system to allow shortcomings in staffing to impact their ability to always be at the top of their game.

More Crown lawyers needed to tackle increasingly complex cases, says head of association

The head of the association that represents Newfoundland and Labrador prosecutors is calling for the Newfoundland and Labrador government to invest in Crown attorneys to help shoulder a growing number of increasingly complex cases. PC MHA Helen Conway Ottenheimer said she's heard the association's concerns and wants the government to launch a review into Crown resources, including staffing.

N.B. reaches tentative deal with Crown prosecutors union

The New Brunswick government says it has struck a tentative collective agreement with the union representing the province’s Crown prosecutors. In a news release, the province said the details of the agreement will be confidential until it is ratified.

L'Association canadienne des juristes de l'État est une association nationale qui représente les intérêts collectifs des procureurs de la Couronne et des juristes de l'État. Elle contribue au développement d'une vision commune des gouvernements et du public sur des questions impliquant les procureurs de la Couronne en tant qu’intervenants du système de justice pénale ainsi que les juristes de l'État à titre d’intervenants du système de justice civile et administrative. L'Association s'intéresse également aux questions et enjeux relatifs au travail des procureurs de la couronne ainsi que des juristes de l'État, plus spécifiquement en ce qui concerne leurs conditions d'embauche et d'emploi. L’Association préconise et encourage le développement professionnel ainsi que la formation continue des procureurs de la couronne et des juristes de l'État. L'ACJÉ est composée des représentants des associations de juristes de l'État œuvrant en droit pénal et civil des dix provinces et du gouvernement fédéral.
